Full Description

{1} The common fields of Charlton were enclosed by an Act of Parliament of 1772, but no map is known. Ridge and furrow of these fields exists on the ground or can be traced on air photos in only a few places within the land attributed to Charlton. Most of it lies south and souh east of the village, especially to the east of Rainsborough Camp where it is arranged in end-on and interlocked furlongs. On the flat limestone areas north east of thevillage modern cultivation has destroyed all trace except along the valley sides where the ridges run at right angles to the contours.
