Summary

Trial excavation ahead of the proposed warehouse extension at RPC Containers identified a sparse scatter of shallow gullies and irregular pits. One pit contained three sherds of middle Saxon pottery and a gully contained two sherds of late Saxon pottery; other features were undated.

Full Description

{1} Trench 1: Single shallow gully 1.3m wide and 0.3m deep. Cut by a modern field drain. No finds.
Trench 2: Two gullies and two pits: gully 1 ran north-south and was 0.2m deep and 0.9m wide but contained no artefacts; gully 2 was small and circular in shape, 0.25m deep and 0.3m wide with no artefacts; pit 1 ran east to west and was 0.65m wide and 2m deep and contained 3 sherds of middle Saxon pottery; pit 4 was irregular shapes, 0.3m deep and 0.7m wide and contained no artefacts.
Trench 3: Irregular shaped pit containing no artefacts.
Trench 4: One gully and two ditches: the gully was aligned north to south and was 1.1m wide by 0.15m deep and contained 2 sherds of late Saxon pottery; ditch 1 was 0.6m wide by 0.25m deep and ran north to south; ditch 2 was 0.5m wide and 0.2m deep and ran north east to south west.
