Type and Period (1)

Full Description

{1} No features which can be securely dated to the Romano-British period were encountered. However, 34% by count of the recovered pottery assemblage is of Romano-British date. Apart from two very small sherds in trenches 4 and 8, all of this pottery comes from trenches 2 and 3. Exclusively Romano-British
sherds were recovered from five contexts in trench 3, but in each case only one or two sherds were present, insufficient to determine whether the contexts are of Roman date, or whether this is residual material. Given the fact that six contexts produced Romano-British and medieval or purely medieval ceramics it may be that all of the Romano-British pottery recovered from the evaluation is residual.

{2} The recovery of 38 sherds of Romano-British pottery as residual material within post-medieval deposits in trenches 1 and 3 reflects well-attested activity and extra-mural occupation immediately south-east of the Roman town circuit. However, as at the adjacent Towcester Racing Stables site, no
recognisable Roman features have been encountered within the evaluation trenches. Their absence appears to suggest that focused Roman occupation either does not extend into the study area itself, or that it is masked or truncated by later activity.

A black silty clay deposite with occasional stone fragments contained 3 sherds of Roman pottery, one of which ad been shaped into a counter, 3 sherds of medieval pottery, together with a single pig phalange.
