Full Description
{1} A substantial stone coffin or trough. It is constructed from a single large block of stone - its worn nature precludes a positive geological identification though its visual nature suggests it is probably ironstone. It is 1.6m long and tapers from 0.73m to 0.57m wide. Traces of tooling marks are evident on the interior faces only and there was no evidence for a high quality cut finish. No head niche or other cutwork was present and a presumed drain hole was present near the north end. The shape of the object is broadly consistent with a stone coffin but the quality of the finished piece is poor for this use. The drain hole and possible pipe grooves together with the barn yard location clearly indicate that it has been used as a drinking trough. It is however uncertain whether a trough is its sole use or whether it is a reuse of an earlier coffin. Photos.
