Full Description

{1} Putative site of Hundredal meeting place has been suggested to be located alongside the modern fenced boundary in the vicinity of a small shrub/tree ringed pond at c.SP59106288.

{2} On the eastern side of the hillfort defences is the site of a small, tree-ringed and largely dried-up pond, the possible site of a Saxon Hundredal meeting place. Hundreds were an administrative unit originating in the late Saxon period, Domesday Book recording the existence of 29 Hundreds in Northamptonshire. Hundred Court meetings were held in the open often utilising a hill, tree or other landscape feature. Some may have been the location for far older meting places. Borough Hill at one time lay within Egelwardesle Hundred, the meeting place or folk moot for which was Spelwell or Spellowe Well which has been suggested as being located at Borough Hill. The pond and trees are a focus for stock shelter. There has been some loss of grass cover on the surrounding banks and localised poaching. The site should be monitored with a view to undertaking remedial works if required.
