Summary

Excavation of Area N, St Peter's Street in 1977. Development of what was possibly the rear portion of one the houses excavated on the St Peter's Street frontage or part of a property fronting Marefair. A series of clay-and stone-lined tanning pits were excavated, as well as at least two buildings. Inside one was an oven or kiln.

Full Description

{1} Excavation in 1977 at St Peter's Street. In Area N, Phase 6/7. Two clay-lined pits & two stone-lined pits latter containing tudor pottery; fifth pit was stone-lined & clay-bonded & dated to C17th; finds included fragment of possible C13th ironstone jamb or arch or arcade with mason's mark; hexagonal copper alloy stud head; piece of late/post medieval window glass; base of medieval glass hanging lamp; wooden lining of tanning pit also recovered;
Wall with oven or kiln & flue set into it; central pedestal akin to industrial use but probably domestic & belonging to property fronting Marefair; possible drying oven also identified; Possible stone building revealed by presence of two stone walls & three areas of floor.
Possibly the rear portion of House 1 or more probably, in view of the destruction of House 1 c1500, part of a property fronting Marefair.
