Building record 953/0/29 - Possible Boot & Shoe Outworker's Workshop
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A small building probably a shoemakers workshop, to the rear of 2 The Banks. Fabric and map evidence suggest that it might have been adapted in the late 19th century from two earlier pigsties and pens. As rebuilt, the north front has two entrances, one presumably opening onto a stair, and a two light window, all beneath a continuous timber lintel. The first floor has a large three-light window with a central opening light. To the rear the building is blind.

Full Description
{1} This small building is probably an outworker's workshop. Fabric and map evidence suggest that it may have been adapted from two earlier pigsties and pens (?Pigsites shown 1884 OS 1:2500, 36.8; Workshop shown 1899 OS 1:2500), the sty to the north accounting for the squared coursed rubble below ground-floor sill level here, and the pen wall accounting for the lower part of the rear wall and its two entrances (one now blocked). These walls were raised in edge-laid brick beneath a slated roof. As rebuilt, the north front has two entrances, one presumably opening onto a stair, and a two-light window, all beneath a continuous timber lintel. The first floor has a large three-light window with a central opening light. To the rear the builsing is blind.
