Monument record 2129/3 - Cogenhoe Mill

Possible site of mill recorded at Domesday. Current mill building dated 1725.

1086 Domesday survey records one mill at Cugentio rendering 13s.
1321 Reference to watermill at this site.
1725 On date-stone of existing building.
1821 Mill advertised for sale by auction, having four pairs of stones and capable of working upwards of 100 quarters of wheat in a week.
1844 Mill advertised to be let, with three pairs of stones.
1866 Advertisement for the sale of Cogenhoe estate included Cogenhoe Mill, let to Mr. Cosford.
1870 Fire at house adjoining mill, thought to have originated from a spark from a locomotive on a train to Wellingborough. It was reported “The engine which is used for working the mill during a shortage of water, has not been in work for some weeks, owing to there being plenty of water.”
1878 Mill advertised to be let, with four pairs of stones.
1828 Mill working only for grist, “Tea and boats provided at moderate cost by the miller.”
1939 Only two pairs of stones, worked overdrift by long quants from an 8 ft. diameter great spur wheel. A circular saw was belt driven from a line shaft.
1940 Mill still working for grist.
Subsequently the mill was gutted of all machinery.
