Full Description

{1} This large works incorporates the late-19th-century tannery of Stephen Patrick, still in production. It also contains a roughly contemporary building probably originating as part of the shoe machinery works of Whitfield Hodgsons & Brough Ltd, who moved to larger premises in Lawson Street in the 1920s.
A building, gabled east-west, and consisting of a tall single storey. This is shown on the 1899 and 1924 maps as occupying a separate plot, with a distinct yard and entrance. The western end of the building appears to be an addition dating from the period 1899-1924. The form of the building, which incorporates a roof-light in the north roof slope and has a large stack at the east gable, suggests an engineering shop. The east gable has four tall segmental-headed windows beneath a single window in the gable apex. Directory entries indicate the presence of Whitfield Hodgsons & Brough, shoe machinery manufacturers, in Union Street between at least 1893 and 1922, and it is assumed that this was the principal building of the works (there are no other large industrial sites shown in Union Street on early maps).
