Full Description
{1} A circular raised mound about 80m in diameter and probably surrounded by a continuous circular ditch. The mound is barren apart from some old oak trees. It has panoramic views in all directions. The clump appears on the 1834 OS first edition mapping. Further details include a summary report with mapping and photographs. The author suspects the site to be that of a prehistoric earthwork such as a hill fort or a barrow.
[SMR note 18/07/2011: although there are suspected sites of prehistoric occupation nearby (principally Mon Ref 5313 c.300m to the south-east) this feature is possibly a tree clump planted in the C18th as an eye catcher for nearby designed landscaping. However it does not appear to align with known sight-lines from Watford Park (nor Norton Park), and it may alternatively have been planted following inclosure of Watford in 1771, perhaps also to function as a covert. The clump is also shown and named on the original OS surveyors drawings of 1815.]
