Full Description
{1} A cast iron water pump replaced the traditional one in Market Square in 1805. The mechanism was contained in a decorative cast iron column with an open-work design of leaves and tendrils. A gas lamp on a fluted coleumn was added in 1826. Beneath the pump was a horse trough topped with four iron balls.
In 1863 a local shoe factory owner donated a fountain to the Market Square to commemorate the wedding of the Prince of Wales to Priness Alexandra, and the pump was moved to the cross roads of Cheyne Walk and Victoria Promenade. It was removed in 1955 on the grounds of road safety.
