Monument record 6947/1 - London & North Western Railway (Rugby to Northampton Branch)
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
The Rugby and Northampton Branch Railway arose from the LNWR's quadrupling of the London and Birmingham Main Line. Two new `slow' lines diverged at Roade, ran through Northampton, joining the Market Harborough branch, which it departed at Kingsthorpe. Castle Station in Northampton was rebuilt, and the River Nene diverted by a quarter of a mile. The line opened in 1881 from Rugby to Northampton, the section to Roade being completed in 1882.
