Full Description

{2} High Delves (or 'Idle Pits'): an area of undisturbed hills and holes last known to have been worked in 1860. Shown on 25" map of 1900 as old stone pits. First worked apparently C14th. The source of Mears Ashby Freestone in the Northampton Sand Formation.

{3} Morton mentions High Delves Quarry: 'One of the strata in the quarry called High-Delves at Mears Ashby has the name of Freestone…'
