Full Description

{1} Trench 1: the capstones of an ironstone culvert or field drain were revealed on a couth east - north west alignment. This alignment suggests that it was constructed for drainage rather than the conveyance of running water.
Trench 2: A continuation of the culvert was seen, here without the capping stones. It comprised two parallel rows of single, roughly dressed but unmortared ironstone pieces laid approx 200-250mm apart. The culvert did not have a stone base and was entirelt filled with silty clay indicating that it had not functioned for a considerable length of time.
