Full Description

{1} History:
1086 Domesday Survey records 2 mills rendering 26s (Need to check this as seems very high for this site)
1736 Richard hawkins, miller
1903 William Douglas, miller (kelly's Directory). He seems to have been the last miller to work this mill because no miller is listed at Chipping Warden in the 1906 and subsequent directories.
1927 Described as "scarcely a trace left"
Documentary sources: Shown un-named on 1791 Eyre's and Jeffries' map; marked at Edgcot Mill on 1810 survey plan for OS; marked at Edgcott Mill on 1827 Bryant's map

The river is crossed on the downstream side of the mill by a slender track-width bridge of fine dressed stone, spanning about 3.25m between stone walls on each side of the river. On the Chipping Warden side the stone wall, of coursed dressed stone is at right angels to the bridge and extends north east in a straight line for about 6m before turning slightly north for a further 6m. The height of the wall is about 2m above the river bed and is in very good condition. A similar wall on the Edgcote side is not in such good condition, apparently disturbed by tree roots, and extends only about 3m from the bridge.
The standard of stonework indicates this was no ordinary mill. Although it is in Chipping Warden parish, marking it as Edgcot Mill on the 1810 OS survey plan and Bryant's 1827 map suggest it may have been the Edgcote estate mill, hence the better than usual stonework.
