{1} Reasons for currently not Listing the Building
CONTEXT English Heritage has been asked to assess Irthlingborough Grange for listing. Consent has been granted for an extensive new housing development known as the Stanton Cross scheme which incorporates Irthlingborough Grange. The house is not locally listed but is considered to be a heritage asset.

HISTORY AND DETAILS Irthlingborough Grange forms part of a farmstead dating to the late C18 or early C19. A porch and flanking bay windows were added to the front elevation in the early-mid C19. The rear north wing was substantially rebuilt in the late C20 and all the fenestration has been replaced. Most of the farm buildings, which vary in date from the late C18/early C19 to the early C20, have been altered.

The three-storey, three-bay house is constructed of roughly dressed limestone with ashlared sandstone dressings, under a low pitched hipped roof clad in slate. The central porch has a moulded stone cornice and a shouldered arch opening, and is flanked by canted bay windows with similar cornices. The storeys are marked by wide stone bands, and the fenestration consists of C20 multi-pane sash windows. The rebuilt two-storey north wing has irregular fenestration. No photographs of the interior have been submitted but much of the joinery is said to survive with the exception of the principal staircase which has been substantially altered.

DISCUSSION On the basis of the evidence to hand, Irthlingborough Grange is not recommended for listing for the following principal reasons:

* Architectural interest: it is of a standard form and appearance, and has nothing to distinguish it from the large number of buildings surviving of this type and period;

* Interior: the quality and overall intactness of the interior is unknown but, based on the typical design of the exterior, the surviving decorative features are likely to be of a similar standard;

* Alterations: the alterations, notably the rebuilding of the north wing and the replacement of the windows, have eroded the historic character of the house and have had a detrimental impact on its architectural integrity.

CONCLUSION Whilst Irthlingborough Grange may be of local architectural interest as a late C18/early C19 house forming the focus of a farmstead, it does not have special architectural and historic interest from a national perspective and should not be added to the statutory List.
