Full Description
{1} Fieldwalking; finds from an area of earthworks ploughed up following the amalgamation of two fields. Plans showing finds distribution by period.
A thin scatter of flint flakes was found, along with the butt end of a polished stone axe, Group 6 (Great Langdale).
A scatter of Iron Age pottery, including Belgic forms, and a bronze coin of Cunobelin (Camulodunum, Mack 248).
Roman pottery of C2nd to C4th type.
Pottery of pre-Anglian and Anglian fabrics and forms, and Ipswich ware, the whole ranging from the C5th to the C9th.
The concentration of Iron Age to mid Saxon pottery at 'i' and 'l' on the plan is of great interest; fieldwalking does not prove continuous occupation, but it can suggest it. Also, this occupation would have been contained within what could have been a sub-rectangular enclosure, of uncertain, but relatively early date on the evidence of its relationship with the ridge and furrow. Its northern and eastern boundary is less certain, but could be the existing road and the former hollow way respectively. Thus the possibility exists here of the identification of an early earthwork feature in a village context, which may have influenced later topographical developments, in particular the trackway system.
