Full Description

{2} Owner Sir Jn Palmer.

{3} The Palmers of Carlton were first mentioned in 10th year of Edward 6th. Sir Jeffery Palmer, Lord of Manor hath here an old mansion house and small park, and nearly 300 acres of wood. Palmer was the possessor of all of Carlton parish.

{6} Post medieval walled park around hall at East Carlton. The area called Nether Park was located to the north-west.

{7} The park had extended into Middleton parish by the early C19th and the main road was diverted around the park.

{8} At Carlton Hall, the seat of the Palmer family, is an existing park.

{9} Postcard shows the ha ha.

{10} No evidence of ha ha in photograph.
