Monument record 2207/1 - Possible Medieval Pottery Production

Alleged Medieval pottery kiln, part of the Stanion pottery industry, was identified by a pottery scatter recorded in 1969. The kiln would have been in production sometime between the mid 12th century to the mid 14th century.

{1} From a fairly small area near the village, several C13th sherds were found in December 1969 (W.R.G.Moore). They included several green-glazed sherds and pieces of jug handles. Now in Northampton Museum.

{2} Medieval kilns at Stanion. There is evidence of a medieval pottery industry in Stanion, though few details of it are known. The kilns appear to have been producing pottery of a type similar to Lyveden ware and probably of the same date. The known sites inculde one at (d) SP91468656.
