Full Description
{1} A single avenue of trees is shown running 1.28km due west from the site of the old lodge at Little Brand, Geddington Chase. At its west end it turns north-westwards. Individual trees are shown [and were used for mapping in GIS].
{3} Marked on Eyre's map of the county published in 1779 (surveyed c.1710).
{4} Shown on the original OS surveyor's drawing of 1814.
{6} Marked on Bryant's county map of 1827.
{7} Beyond the gardens and indeed outside the park, the early C18th saw the construction of an elaborate system of rides and avenues laid out across the surrounding countryside connecting the park with the existing woodland on the estate. This probably took many years to complete, and the actual dates of the rides and avenues are not known. All the work was certianly completed by 1750 when shown in an estate map (NRO). A correspondent writing in 1744 implies that most of the work had been carried out by that time. Plan of avenues and rides: Fig.141.
The arrangement, in its final form, consisted of about 23 miles of tree-lined rides linking various blocks of existing woodland. Within the woods were more rides covering almost as great a distance. Many of these were new, but older rides were also incorpoarted within the scheme. Some of the new rides were carefully laid out in a pattern radiating from the centres of the woods, as at Geddington Chase and Grafton Park Wood. Others were aligned so that the steeples of neigbouring parish churches could be seen along them. Thus a ride through Geddington Chase has Stanion Church as a focal point, while another in the same area is aligned on Geddington Church.
