Full Description

{1} An early Saxon cemetery, with possible inhumations and cremations was found in ironstone quarrying between 1880-1885; it was largely in Burton Latimer parish and partly in Barton Seagrave. The finds were bought from J.F. Nurman of Oundle. There is a suggestion of possibly 150 vessels; a total of 17 vessels have survived as well a group of metalwork possible from a single female grave.

{2} In March 1891 14 pots and other finds were purchased, they were found 'some years before on the boundary of Burton Latimer and Barton Seagrave parishes' the finds included five line and stamp decorated early Saxon pot vessels, one plain pot vessel, an iron shield top, 3 bronze fibula, part of a girdle hanger, a bronze loop handle, a bronze plate with catch, a bronze plate fragment, a string of 21 glass beads and some bronze gilt disc brooches; also one black stamp decorated early Saxon pot vessel, one plain pot vessel; the latter two were presented by Miss Newman of Eastbourne; found with other items; quarries only in the area of SP89007580.

{3} RCHME gives location of SP 892764, but says the cemetery was found on the parish boundary; (wrong location?). At least 17 urns, an iron shield-boss and bronze-gilt disc brooches were discovered.

{8} Several urns, a shield boss and other minor objects found at Barton Seagrave before 1902, now in the British Museum. Classified as a mixed cemetery. [Reference to Meaney given by RCHM II is incorrect. Not referred to by Meaney- according to NRHE. See record 3771/2].

{19} Mr Dix suggests they may have been found at c SP 890 773. (This can be no more than an educated guess.)
