Full Description

{2} Fieldwalking as part of the Raunds Survey was carried out by S.Parry. The site produced Iron Age, Romano-British and Saxon pottery as surface scatters. 1,158 sherds of Iron Age pottery were recovered from within the hillfort, dating mainly from C3rd-2nd BC. A concentration identified from the north-east area. Outside the hillfort two more concentrations were found.

{3} The site produced Iron Age, Roman and Saxon surface scatters.
Some 405 sherds of Iron Age pottery were recovered by fieldwalking (Fig.6.3c). The main concentration was located within the hillfort defences and dates predominantly from the C3rd-C2nd BC, although small quantities of earlier and later material are also present. A similar pattern was indicated by intensive collection within the north-eastern half of the hillfort where 753 sherds were found. Outside the main ditch two other concentrations were recovered. South-west of the entrance a linear scatter extends towards a smaller cropmark and this could represent the line of a track, perhaps with associated settlement, or alternatively a manuring scatter. At either side of the hillfort the virtual absence of pottery suggests that the area was not intensively manured, possibly indicating pasture.
