Full Description

{2} Fieldwalking as part of the Raunds Survey was carried out by S.Parry. The site produced Iron Age, Romano-British and Saxon pottery as surface scatters.

{3} The site produced Iron Age, Roman and Saxon surface scatters.
Fieldwalking has revealed extensive Roman surface scatters with 1614 sherds of pottery recovered from the reconnaissance (Fig 6.3 d+e) and an additional 7815 from intensive collection. The main concentration was mostly located within the northern half of the hillfort defences, though this need not imply their continuation as anything more than predominant earthworks. Indeed the concentration extended beyond the defences onto the small plateau of ironstone to the east . It may suggest that the principal area of settlement covered about 6ha. The distribution and quantity of pottery cap[able of more precise dating suggests that the settlement flourished until the C4th when there may have been some decline in activity. An extensive low density scatter to the south and west of the hillfort probably represents manuring, implying that an area of at least 18ha was intensively farmed. The scatter extended some 250m upslope from the main concentration before ending sharply, perhaps at a former boundary. The restricted distribution of sherds below the concentration may be due to hillwash masking the Roman ground surface.
