Full Description

{2} Fieldwalking as part of the Raunds Survey was carried out by S.Parry. The site produced Iron Age, Romano-British and Saxon pottery as surface scatters.

{3} The site produced Iron Age, Roman and Saxon surface scatters.
Some 252 sherds of locally made early middle Saxon pottery were re covered from the reconnaissance (Fig 6.3f) with a further 457 from intensive collection. In addition, seven sherds of Ipswich Ware which were found during the intensive survey may denote activity in the period AD 650-850. A similar distribution to that of the Roman sherds was obtained, with the main concentration covering an area of about 1.5ha within the hillfort. More widely distributed sherds formed a light concentration within the rest of the area encompassed by the Iron Age defences and on the plateau to the east. A further concentration immediately outside the entrance of the hillfort may also represent settlement and could denote that the entrance was still a significant feature. An area of 12ha to the south and west of the main concentration contained small quantities of pottery probably derived from manuring. If so, the overall distribution of finds largely follows the previous Roman pattern except that the scatter is less extensive to the north. Again, the absence of pottery below the main concentration may be due to the presence of hillwash.
