Full Description

{1} Pit F3 was sub-rectangular in plan, 2.25m long and 1.4m wide, and was cut 0.90m into the bedrock of yellow gritty clay. The pit was sectioned, but no environmental evidence or small finds were recovered. The lower half of the fills consisted of sterile red-brown silt with grey lenses, perhaps turf and it seems likely that this deposit had mostly been excavated from a new pit nearby. The upper half of the pit was packed with limestone, sandstone and a few glacial pebbles, raising the question as to whether it perhaps had a ritual function. The pottery found in pit F3 is similar to the material recovered from the upper layer of the presumed quarry pit (1677/0/9) and dates to the 1st century BC or the early decades of the 1st century AD.
