Full Description
{1} “LIME AVENUE” earthworks.
This avenue is lined by trees on the earliest available on the historic and recent air photographs and these have largely obscured any upstanding or levelled archaeological features that may lie beneath them. However, the lidar data indicates that the outer edges of the tree alignments are marked by narrow ditches. It is not clear if these ditches were contemporary with the original layout of the avenue or later additions.
The avenue is aligned south-west to north-east and runs between the ha ha to the front of Drayton House and the edge of the park. For the most part the avenue is approximately 44m wide, but as it approaches the house it widens to 110m to mirror the width of the East Parterre. The avenue was laid out across the remains of medieval ridge and furrow and some furrow are still visible within its path (see AP no. 8). (1-2).
