Monument record 4848/0/4 - Medieval Ridge & Furrow (Earthworks & Cropmarks)

{1} Medieval ridge and furrow and banks or baulks are visible as earthworks on historic air photos to the north-west of SLIPTON AVENUE. Most of this ploughing is oriented near east to west and is divided by a pair of banks or baulks at SE9586 8002. At SP9596 7996 there seems to be an overlap between northwest to south east aligned furrows and north-east to south-west aligned furrows. At SP9586 8013 it appears that furrows were cut into the original broad lands to create narrower ridges. Some of the ridge and furrow is cut by a drainage ditch of possible post medieval date centred at SP9593 7995. Only the small fragmentary of furrows at SP9581 7970 appear to survive as earthworks on the more recent sources, all of the other ridges appear to have been levelled. (1-3)
