Full Description

{4} Domesday records one mill rendering 10s at Nortone. Further references are made to the mill in 1676. Although still working in 1919 by 1928 the mill was being used as a residence. It was demolished in the 1950s when the M1 motorway was built, materials from it being used as hard core for the motorway.

The site was visited 13th February 2001. The blue brick arch of the former wheel race was observed at its exit into the present bypass channel where the retaiining walls are of red brick. Photographs dating to the 1930s indicate that there were formerly buildings associated with the mill on the north side of the modern bridleway, connected to the mill by means of an overhead gantry between the upper storeys.
It is possible that there is some underground evidence of the mill. Remaining evidence might however be lost if alterations are made to the watercourses, for example for flood protection.
