Full Description

{1} Argues that this building is a lodge for the detached piece of Whittlewood Forest on this side of Watling Street, a partner for the major forest lodge at Shrobb on the other side of the road.
The present building appears to be a two-bay building of the 17th century with, unusually, a lobby entrance from the south side against the axial stack at the west end. Built of limestone rubble, with a plain tiled roof. One storey and attic, originally two bays, with a third bay added to the west end in the 1990s, and lower service winf extending to the east converted as a separate residence. The building has also been extended at the rear, under a shallower pitch roof.
The house does not appear on the 1608 Whittlebury Forest survey (NRO4210) although it would appear to be sited later in the 42-acre extension to the forest land on the north east side of Watling Street called Grave. If there were an original house, it was clearly rebuilt as a forester's lodge for this forest extension.
