Full Description

{1} The barn would originally have been free standing within the farmyard although is now attached to The Beeches by a 19th century brick kitchen. The barn is built of random local limestone rubble, roughly brought to course, with a sheet asbestos roof. The top two courses of the east and west walls are in brick and the north gable has been entirely rebuilt in brick. There are two doorways on the west side of the building, both with plank doors; a bricked up cartway to the north end of it, with a single barn door and modern stable door; one blocked up window to the east elevation and a small glazed window to the south end of the elevation and a single door opening with a 19th century glazed and panelled door to the south elevation.

Internally, the building is now divided into three bays. The southern bay is in two levels: the ground floor and above it a mezzanine accessed from the middle bay. Each bay is accessed independently from the outside. In addition, there is a connecting doorwat between bay 2 and 3. The building has a brick floor running the length of it and a manger in the northern bay. Much of the roof strcutre has gone but old timbers survive in two trusses, with newer purlins.

The earliest map to show the barn is the OS of 1884. However by the 1830s brick had overtaken stone as the building material of preference in Wappenham which suggests that the barn is earlier, perhaps late 18th or early 19th century.
