Full Description
{1} The second phase of activity comprised four linear ditches and a number of pits.
All the ditches extended beyond the excavation limits and all were orientated east - west. With one exception all were shallow with flat bases and steep sides. Three were parallel and regularly spaced approx 10m apart suggesting they formed tenement boundaries. The fourth might be a replacement for one of these.
The pits varied considerably in size and shape.
The parallel alignments and roughly even spacing of these ditches suggest that they formed the boundaries of a series of yards backing on to North End. The pits may mark domestic activity within the yards, particularly the disposal of rubbish.
