Full Description

{1} A two-bay brick-built extension was added to 42 Main Street during the C19, judging from the size and type of bricks used. The C19 extensions to the east appear agricultural or industrial in form and scale, with no internal decorative detail. The group of bread ovens were of interest and a rare example, particularly in terms of their number. Kellys Directory of 1876 lists a Baker at East Haddon and this reference may well relate to 42 Main Street although no specific address is given. The bread ovens have subsequently been removed and the C19 east extension has been demolished.
On the 1885 Ordnance Survey map it occupies the same footprint as it does at present.
The two-storey brick extension at the east end of the house is stepped down from the ridge of the main house and comprises a single bay with first and ground-floor timber, casement windows. The ground-floor window and four-panel, timber door both have arched brick heads. The single-storey extension is again stepped down and has a plain front and rear elevation. The gable end is constructed of squared coarse has to eaves level with a small window in the apex. It is unclear from the available evidence how access is gained to this part of the building. To the rear the remains of a lean-to extension are attached to the two-storey annexe. This has been rendered, but the original back walls of the extensions are plain, exposed brick. The rear of the single-storey extension has been further extended and protrudes beyond the main building line; a change in the pitch of the roof defines this.
INTERIOR:
The entrance opens into a through passage with doors to either side; one provides access to a small room to the east and eventually to the two-storey extension. Inside the two-storey extension was a large cast-iron oven mounted in a waist height stone hearth with smaller flanking ovens on either side; four in total with fire setting and stoke holes beneath each. Access to the first floor was gained by a fixed wooden ladder. These latter features were removed in May 2012 when the eastern extension was demolished.

{2}{3} A two-storey, red brick building with round cast-iron tiw-plates each side of the top of the gound floor window and an unfenestrated projection to the east which was Craddock's bakery. Baking ceased in the early 1970s but the bakehouse interior remains as it was at that time.

{4} The 19th century saw a change of use of the site as a whole with the addition of the former bakehouse at the east end of the house. This was demolished approximately two years ago.
