Full Description

{1} The central 4-5m of trench 1 were taken up by demolition material and a partially robbed out wall, which, based on the finds recovered (clay tobacco-pipe, glass, brick, tile) dates to the 17th-18th centuries. A stretch of rough ironstone walling, 1.5m long, was recorded aligned north-north-west to south-south-east, bounding the demolition material to the north west. The walling may have been a foundation for upper brick courses of a post medieval building.

{2} Two wells were identified; both were constructed from dressed ironstone blocks and were 1m in diameter. Both still held water and were not excavated further. The depth of standing water was measured at 2.2m. The construction cut for each was 2-2.5m wide.

Two cellars were also found, thought to have been part of the same building depicted on a map of 1779. The cellar walls were substantial and were constructed from a mixture of ironstone and limestone. In one of the cellars was a drain constructed roughly of limestone and ironstone blocks and capped with limestone slabs. One cellar had several layers of rubble and was likely to have been backfilled during the building’s demolition; artefacts recovered from these layers indicate a 18th to 19th century date for the demolition.
