Full Description

{1} Two large pits were seen; they measured 5m and 10m by 1.5m. Both pits posibly represent the remains of backfilled quarry pits or large rubbish pits in the gardens. They could feasibly represent a single large feature. The features in the western part of the site, including pits and ditches and the foundation of a wall, are in the kitchen garden area and are probably related to horitcultural use.

Two limestone wall foundations were seen in trench 5, both aligned north west - south east. No dating evidence was seen. However, a narrow building present on the south east part of the site of the 1884 OS map may have used one or both of these foundations.

A substantial limestone wall foundation aligned north east - south west with a return arm turned 90 degrees was found in trench 1. The limestone foundation is difficult to date. It is a substantial, load bearing foundation with no evidence of floor layers or internal features. No buildings are depicted in this position on maps dating from 1808 onwards.
