Summary

Also known as The Old Maltings.The Old Maltings in St James Road was built in 1888 for the Castle Brewery which was operated by Thomas Manning and Company Limited, and situated in Black Lion HIll. The building had two kilns and is thought to be the first to have a concrete floor. The brewery closed in about 1933.In 1994 the building became part of Frog Island microbrewery.

Full Description

{1} Frog Island Brewery, in a malthouse built by Thomas Manning's Castle Brewery, founded 1878 and acquired by Phipps in 1933. The Castle brewery stood nearby on Black Lion Hill.

{2} Built 1887-8 by J Ingman & Son.

{3} The Old Maltings in St James Road was built in 1888 for the Castle Brewery which was operated by Thomas Manning and Company Limited, and situated in Black Lion HIll. The building had two kilns and is thought to be the first to have a concrete floor. The brewery closed in about 1933.

{4} In 1994 the building became part of a microbrewery - Frog Island Brewery.

{5} it is brick building of three storeys with eleven bays, except at the east end which housed two kilns, with distinctive pyramidal roofs. After the brewery had become a subsidiary of P Phipps & Co Ltd, it was used as a bonded warehouse.
