Full Description
{1} Documentary evidence; possible castle; Fieldname: Castle Hill; SP 780 670;
{2} The low profile remains of an earthwork have been observed on a small promontory. The remains are in a field called "Castle Hill". The remains are slight, but have recognisable form; it seems to comprise a low squarish oval mound, occupying the summit of the promontory. There is a trace of a bank around the summit on the north and east, and of a ditch on the north-west. It is probably the site identified by Bridges as "Castle Hill": "On the north-west is Castle Hill, where foundations of stone have been discovered upon digging, and there are some vestiges of a trench. And further north-ward is an artificial hill exactly round, out of which flows a mineral water."
The site lies north-west of the site that formed the new Hall, and is two hundred metres south of the round hill in New Fox Covert / Hog Hole Spinney, which is the "artificial hill exactly round". This hill was later identified as Castle Hill, after the original earthwork had been lost and later the RCHME identified another site entirely (pref. ref. 5227/1/0);
