Full Description

{1} Identified by South Northamptonshire Council as being a building of historic and/or architectural significance.

{2} Stone cottage of five and a half bays under a reed thatched roof and two and a half floors. Chimney and hall are either side of the half bay, which encloses the chimney stack, with a service room beyond the hall. There are opposing doors at the low end of the hall and a further door opening against the stack on the side away from the road. The highest timbers of the roof appear to be possibly as early as the 15th century. In the 17th century a refurbishment involved the replacement of the lower collars on the trusses; probably associated with the insertion of a floor or floors. The chimney stack may have been inserted at this time. All the timbers appear clean though some are replacements. Notably, the trusses either side of the half, T2-T3 bay, which contains the main stack, have been replaced due to fire damage.
The building was divided into two by the early 19th century along truss 3, providing two cottages. The post 1700 service room extension to the north-east was in place by that time.
