Full Description

{6} First mentioned in Domesday survey, with a recorded population of 31. In 1332 the vill paid tax of 36s.83/4d. Which was the smallest sum in the hundred. In 1524 23 tax-payers are listed, and in 1674 34 people are recorded in the Hearth Tax Rreturns. In 1801 the parish held 143 inhabitants. This suggests that the population was largely stable, with no major desertion, and that surviving earthworks may be a result of movement rather than shrinkage. It is probable that the original focus of the village was around the church, but the construction of the hall and its gardens in 1680 may have pushed the focus of the village southwards. The extant earthworks suggest possible house platforms adjoining a broad hollow-way north of Dingley Hall.
