Full Description

{1} Settlement spreads back from the rim of the hill to a considerable distance on the flat part of the hilltop. No limit to the settlement was detected.
Geophysical survey identified a complex arrangement of quite large enclosed features was identified on the south side of Field 5, measuring between 30m and 50m in diameter and of squared-oval shape. These enclosures appear to lie within a series of longer linear features possibly representing field boundaries.

{2} Further geophysical survey was undertaken to the south-east of the reservoir in the second year of the Barby hill project. Further roundhouses, linear boundaries and enclosures were identified.

{3} A trial trench was excavated in an area where the geophysical survey results had identified a very faint ring ditch, probably a roundhouse. Several possible ring ditches were identified in the trench, although the features were very faint and shallow. Two possible wide hearths were also identified along with small quantities of iron slag indicating that iron-working was being carried out in this area.
