Full Description

{1} Identified by South Northamptonshire Council as being a building of historic and/or architectural significance.

{2} Analysis, plan & photographs. The remaining two-bay fragment of a larger building which was truncated in the mid 19th century. A spine beam of the 17th century or possibly earlier, and a bressumer for one hearth remain, but there are no indications later or earlier than that. The extent of the original building is indicated on the map of 1838 {3}.

Photographs and plans from 1970 show the cottage before the heightening of the walls and other major refurbishments. The inglenook fireplace was found at that time, when several generations of later hearth arangement were removed. The 1838 map of Wicken shows this building as part of a longer range. The map of 1885 shows the cottage as it stands now.
