Summary

Site of a brick shoe factory built in 1896 in St George's Street, built on a corner site. It had a tall circular cupola. Also known as the Norvic Shoe Company Limited.

Full Description

{1}Shoe factory built circa 1896; brick building with slate roof; 2 storeys with half cellar at street level; was still in use in 1966 by the Norvic Shoe Company; formerly Marlow & Sons Pheonix Works; now demolished.

{4} Marlow's was the last purpose-built shoe factory founded in Northampton and dates back to 1890. The archway was the only part of the building that survived a fire c.2000, and has been re-erected further down St. George's Street as part of an art gallery.

{5} Built for J. Marlowe & Sons, in 1890, the factory was built on a corner site, with a prominent tower and dome; a four-storey extension was added in 1895 to accommodate a machine welting plant.
