Full Description
{1} Post med watermill;
{2} 1154-1218 Benedictine Abbey, France, set up a cell in Everdon on a site later occupied by the manor house. It is possible the Benedictines organised the building of the very long and well-engineered leat.
1705 John Davis, miller at Everdon.
1786 William Folwell, farmer & grazier, insured on house and watermill adjoining in great Everdon in tenure of George Osborne, for £50.
1792 Mill destroyed by fire and rebuilt in brick on the remains of the original stone building.
1920 Richard bird, junior, miller- the last recorded here in trade directories.
1934 Mill eventually ceased working, presumably after being used for gristing (producing animal food). Later converted to barn by removing machinery and wheel, except the wheel shaft dropped down into wheel race.
1992 Conversion to dwelling completed (involving extraction of wheel shaft from wheel race).
The former mill has been converted into a two storey with attic dwelling of brick walls with slated, gable roof, having three dormers on the east side and a chimney added at the south gable end. The former mill cottage at the north end is of one storey with attic, stone-walled with a slated gable roof having two dormer windows on the south end.The ground has been raised on the east side of the buildings and all windows and doors, including the first floor taking-in door at the south end have been raised.
The wheel arch is clearly visible on the west side, as is the outline of the mill-pond. At the end of the leat feeding this are the remains of the sluice to the bypass channel, which entered the Everdon Brook near the south side of the road bridge.
Internally, nothing remains of the machinery and the wheel pit has been floored over after removing the old wheel shaft
