Full Description

{1} Identified by South Northamptonshire Council as being a building of historic and/or architectural significance.

{2} The south barn (the earliest of the two) is built of coursed limestone and ironstone with dressed quoins. Contemporary with the barn are two flanking walls which separate the farmyard from the road and which may have been used to define the area of stock yards. Former openings on the east side comprisied a wide cart door and a probable window. This barn was probably a cart hovel. In the north wall is a probable lamp niche. The entire west wall has been removed by later alterations, probably in the early 20th century, possibly to provide garage space. Former hay loft marked by empty sockets and joists. Roof supported by cruck-style trusses; roof covering modern wooden shingles. This barn probably dates to the mid-18th century.
The north barn was created by building a stone wall parallel to the original yard wall. There has never been a north wall, so that the barn could have been used for stock or as a cart hovel. The roof is hipped at the north end and abutts the north wall of the earlier barn. The roof covering is of modern wooden shingles and the floor is earth and stone fragments. This barn was built at some point after the south barn.
At some point in the 19th century buttresses were added to alleviate lateral movement in both barns.
