Full Description

{1} The early middle Saxon pottery scatter largely fills the field with a core area of 2.3ha located in the centre of its southern half. Nine trial trenches were subsequently excavated, covering most of the field except the north-west around the round barrows. Only a further 7 sherds of early middle Saxon pottery were then recovered and mostly from the base of the secondary tilth. A single sherd was found in the fill of a possible palaeochannel which may have formed the original line of the Raunds Brook. If so, this stream would have divided the surface scatter from the two early middle Saxon structures which were excavated to the west of Cotton Lane, thereby forming a paired site.
