Full Description

{1} The late Saxon pottery distribution extends from Cotton Lane into the centre of the field with an absence of material form the north (Fig.H). This may indicate an area of settlement contemporary with the long range to the west of the lane, though trial excavation was limited to the exposure of medieval layers.
The medieval pottery distribution is similar to the late Saxon but extends to the Hog Dyke (Fig.I). Excavation adjacent to Cotton Lane revealed traces of buildings and other structures. Despipte the dense surface scatter trenches in the eastern half of the field failed to identify features containing medieval pottery, possibly suggesting that the settlement was confined to a strip close to the lane.
