Monument record 2001/0/2 - Medieval boundary ditches

{1} At least five boundary ditches and an isolated pit were found. The ditches were characteristically V-shaped in profile and survived in good condition below the present subsoil. The majority were undated, although the lower fill of one contained pottery of late medieval date, which may indicate when the feature was going out of use.
The relationship of the ditches in trench 1 could suggest that the smaller was a bedding trench for a palisade or fence, although its splayed profile might preclude this interpretation.

Trench 1:
Ditch aligned NW-SE, 3m wide and 0.77m deep. It had a regular V-shaped profile.
2 parallel ditches aligned NE-SW. One was 1.75m wide and 0.54m deep with convex sides and a concave base. The other was 2.4m wide and 0.91m deep with steeply sloping stepped sides and a concave base, and showed some sign of having been recut.
Trench 2:
A ditch aligned NE-SW, 1.6m wide and 0.83m deep with a regular V-shaped profile. A small quantity of late medieval pottery was recovered from its fill, along with a single sherd of abraded Roman greyware. An oval pit, 2m by 0.95m and 0.22m deep was also seen.
Trench 3:
A ditch aligned NE-SW, 1.2m wide and 0.15m deep.
