Full Description

{2} A 0.05 m thick mortar surface sealed a layer containing late Saxon pottery, which in turn sealed a pit and layer which produced a large sherd of Middle Saxon pottery (Ipswich Ware).
A shallow hollow containing Early Medieval pottery was also seen.
The medieval pottery from trench 6 was found stratified in deposits which had accumulated upon a thin layer of mortar denoting an old occupation surface. This indicates that, not surprisingly, domestic occupation in the Middle Ages probably concentrated close to the manor house and Manor Street frontage.
