Full Description
{1} 10a Herriotts Lane is a small shop built against the south gable of 10 Herriotts Lane, a larger house and shop. No leather trades uses for either building have been identified and the original function of 10a remains obscure. A combination of fabric and evidence suggests that it originated as a single storey building on the street frontage, but that it was raised to two storeys and extended towards the rear before 1885. The 1885 OS map indicates that the rear section was open on its north side, and at first floor level a loading door opened onto the yard. At this stage it seems to have formed part of a larger complex including the present 32a Havelock Street, which in 1965 was a bakery. By 1965 (and possibly earlier) the two properties were distinct.
