Full Description

{1}On the site of `The Temple' one of the lost decorative landscape features of Boughton's 18th century parkland "….. An internment camp was constructed on the site for Austrian and German prisoners of war during the first world war, and later used for displaced persons after the Second World War.",

{2}A concentration of regularly ordered small buildings/?huts are depicted centered on SP74906630 on the 1958 edition OS 1:10560 plan (sheet SP76NW). These are identified as `Agricultural Hostel'.

{3} Camp newspaper 'Lager Zietung'. Classified by the Red Cross in 1945 as a 'German Working Camp'. Now demolished.

{4} The later, Camp 35 (K-G Lager 35) produced a camp 'magazine' in late 1947.

{5} "There were as at 20 February 1947 POW camps at: No 35 Boughton Park Camp Boughton Northampton".

NMR library No 1420: v.82.RAF.758 Ptl. 8th April 1953 Frame No 0018- Camp still clearly recognisable but with perimeter gone and around 50% of the nissen removed.
NMR library No 1607: F21 542/RAF/97 15th December 1954- Camp now abandonned apart from a small number of huts; the remainder have been demolished.

{8} In December 1941, the camp was listed as having Italian POWs, some of whom were formed as a construction crew to build Harrington Camp 49. Purpose built standard type camp. Italian, then Austrian from May 1946, and then mainly German POWs. There was a visit by the Internation Red Cross in 1944- Italian prisoners, 870 capacity.

{10} The site of a Second World War prisoner of war camp at Boughton Park (SP 749 664), known as Camp 35. This was a purpose-built, standard type camp. Common buildings and facilities at standard type camps included water towers, offices, officer's mess, a canteen, guard rooms, barrack huts, ablution blocks, cell blocks, a camp reception station (medical facility/hospital), a cookhouse, dining rooms, recreation rooms and living huts or tents. It was a German work camp. Later during the war it was renamed Camp 259.

{11} Boughton Park Camp closed in 1948.
