Full Description

{1} The building is a two storey stone structure. The two storeys are entirely separate with no internal access between the two. The dimensions of the building are approximately 7m 40 by 3m 40; the walls are 44cm thick (at ground floor level around the door). The ground floor is currently raised 44cm above ground height.
The access to the ground floor is through a central doorway which has a timber lintel above. The only other opening is a large single light, splayed window with stone lintel and sill. To either side of the doorway are two small openings, at mid body height, which originally went through the thickness of the wall. Both openings have now been blocked on the exterior of the building (one with brick and the other with stone) to form small, deep cupboards within the wall. The southern most opening is larger (measuring 30cm wide by 22cm high) and has a small stone or slate lintel and sill; the other (measuring 20cm wide by 22cm high) has been partially rebuilt in brick as part of shoring up of the doorway. The openings are of unknown function — possibly associated with ventilation or construction of the building. They are both located approximately 1m 20 above the height of the floor. The ground floor is currently used as a bottle store for the public house.
The other features of interest on the ground floor are the remains of eight wooden panels, which were bolted on to one of the beams running across the width of the building, these have since been broken off. It is possible that these formed a small partition in the building. On the west wall of the building is a piece of metal which has been embedded into wall.
The first floor of the building is accessed by a roughly hewn stone staircase at the south end of the structure. There is a simple doorway at the top of this staircase with a wooden lintel above. The only other remaining opening is a four light mullioned window on the north east wall of the building. This window is long and narrow (measuring approximately 144cm by 63cm) and is situated just 45cm above floor height. There was possibly an additional opening (or fireplace) further along the east wall which has since been blocked up, it was not possibly to verify this due to the lack of light in the building. The height of the walls up to eaves height is different on the east and west walls; the former measures 1m 48 and the latter 1m 66. The upper floor is currently used as a wood store.
A wooden strip has been inserted into the stone masonry of the eastern wall; this is of unknown function. There is no visible sign of this feature on the exterior face of the building, but the structure is covered with ivy and other foliage.
The floor is constructed of simple wooden floorboards running along the length of the building and is supported by beams.
The roof has been replaced and now consists of a simple wooden A-frame construction with corrugated iron covering. There is an inserted skylight and a hole for the flue of a stove in the roof. The flue has been broken off and a small section remains in-situ.
